Gerhard Bellof
Animal nutrition
Prof Dr Gerhard Bellof was born in Giessen (Hesse) in 1958. As a farmer's son, he studied "Agriculture" at the University of Applied Sciences in Witzenhausen and then completed a degree in "Agricultural Sciences" with a specialisation in "Animal Production" at the University of Giessen.

He completed his doctorate at the University of Kassel-Witzenhausen in the field of animal nutrition (Prof Burgstaller). In 2010, he completed his habilitation in animal nutrition at the University of Giessen with a thesis on the nutrition of growing sheep.

In 1992, he was appointed Professor of Animal Nutrition at the Weihenstephan University of Applied Sciences - now Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences. He ended his teaching career at this university in 2024.

Mr Bellof's research focuses on the use of domestic protein feed in livestock feeding. Several research projects on 100% organic feeding were also carried out under his scientific leadership.

Mr Bellof has been Chairman of the Expert Commission on Animal Nutrition at the Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants (UFOP), Berlin, for 15 years. In this capacity, he has co-authored a large number of practical publications on the use of grain legumes, rapeseed and soya products in livestock feed.

He is co-editor and co-author of numerous specialist books on the subject of animal feed and livestock feeding.
